Why I Love the WSJ #673

WDSU-TV reports that a group styling itself Citizens For Accountability and Transparency in Government has filed a recall petition against Stacy Head, a New Orleans city councilman. The station quotes the group's head:

"This is a majority black district, and we think that it should have black representation," said Malcolm Suber, who is leading the recall petition. "And if it is going to be a white representative, they should be sensitive to the black community, and she is not . . . She is opposed to the interests of the black community, and again I think she's a racist."
So, just to sum up, Suber's complaints about Head are as follows: 1) She's the wrong color. 2) She's racially prejudiced.

Would it be insensitive to employ the old idiom about the pot and the kettle?

Letter to the Editor: and best thing to come out of Michigan in a long time!

Rep. Barney Frank and New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo have a great idea "to tie Wall Street pay to the long-term performance of the firms" ("Cuomo, Frank Seek to Link Executive Pay, Performance," Money & Investing, March 13). But we shouldn't take a chance on messing up our financial system any more than it is already. Instead, we should try their idea on a system that is so messed up that we are confident we couldn't mess it up any further: Congress.
Let's tie the pay of Rep. Frank and the other legislators to their approval ratings. A 50% approval rating would mean 100% salary, 40% would bring 80%, 30% would give 60%, and so on. And, of course, no expense account this year. We all have to sacrifice in this crisis. I'm sure you understand.
